From NOAH EBIJE, Kaduna   No fewer than six persons were killed in the early hours of yesterday as a fuel tanker exploded in Kaduna. The incident, according to eyewitnesses, occurred about 3 a.m. in Mararraban Jos, a suburb of Kaduna city when a trailer truck ran into the petrol tanker that was reversing into the main road.  The eyewitnesses added that as soon as the two vehicles collided, the fuel tanker exploded and the two drivers and other occupants of the two vehicles were burnt to death in the ensuing fire.

In another development on Friday night, gunmen killed a policeman and injured two others at a checkpoint in Ungwan Dosa area of Kaduna metropolis. The injured policemen whose names had not been revealed as at the time of filing this report are receiving medical attention at the emergency ward of Saint Gerald Catholic Hospital in Kaduna.

According to the State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Adenaike, "one policeman died and another was injured. The gunmen escaped with bullet wounds. One of the gunmen has been arrested. We are yet to ascertain if the gunmen are armed robbers or terrorists."

Meanwhile, Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has condoled the families of those who died in the petrol tanker accident, and urged drivers to be extra vigilant while driving or parking their vehicles.

Yero said that the state government was also collaborating with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to ensure the speedy completion of parking lots for tanker drivers in the area as well as the completion of ongoing road projects to forestall recurring accidents on major roads.
