Kano govt to commence N5.5bn Jankara River project soon

The Kano State government is to commence the N5.5 billion Jankara River project soon.

The state government said the project is to bring an end to the perennial loss of lives and property caused by flooding, as well as to protect the communities from other environmental hazards. State Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transportation, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, disclosed this at the opening of a one-day sensitisation workshop organised by the state government to sensitise the communities along the Jankara River on the importance of the project.

The commissioner also said that the programme was to intimate the people on government's plan to compensate owners of houses and shops that would be affected by the project.

Yusuf said plans have reached advanced stage to pay all the affected residents along the river, stressing that the exercise, which included owners of houses, shops, farms, community leaders, trade associations, village and ward heads, security agents and government executives would discuss issues of protection of lives and property during and after the project.

The commissioner said after the completion of the project, the state government would provide basic amenities for the people, adding that the project, which would cover 6.7 kilometres, would also provide the enabling environment for the establishment of more businesses in the affected areas.
