The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State has blasted Governor Adams Oshiomhole over his comment during the aborted South-South stakeholders' meeting organised by the Presidential Advisory Committee on National dialogue in Benin City on Monday.

The party was miffed by Oshiomhole's comment that the exercise would end the way of previous conferences in the country. Reacting in a press release, Chairman of Edo PDP, Chief Dan Orbih said Oshiomhole's action and comments during the gathering was an outright indictment on the person of President Goodluck Jonathan, members of the Senator Femi Okurounmu-led committee and the entire Nigerians.

Orbih described the governor's pre-emptive comments as "uncultured, uncivilised and an area boy politics," which entirely did not reflect the character of a public figure but merely meant to discourage millions of citizens of the country from the good intention of the President. Orbih said: "There are certain statements you don't just make.

The President of this country has decided to put together this body to meet the yearnings of all those who have been clamouring for a national conference. How do you pre-empt the outcome of an exercise that has not even taken off by condemning it; by telling Nigerians that you don't expect anything good to come from it? It was an indictment on the President. It was an indictment on the entire country, the entire populace, especially, those who have been clamouring for this type of conference."

According to him, "I think the spontaneous reaction by all those who were present not just from the hall where the Talakawas, the ordinary citizens were seated, explained it all. There were also reactions even from the high table over the uncomplimentary remarks and uncivilized comments by the governor."

Orbih added: "What I saw at the South-South stakeholders meeting organised in Benin, Edo State capital by the Presidential Advisory Committee on the proposed national dialogue was a show of shame. I was shocked to watch the reactions of people on the uncultured remarks by the governor.

I think his remarks were off the mark. You see there is a basic minimum that is expected of somebody who is occupying that respected office of governor. There are certain statements you don't just make." Concluding, Orbih asked rhetorically, "How do you pre-empt the outcome of an exercise that has not taken off by condemning it; by telling Nigerians that you don't expect anything good to come from it?"

"I feel sad even as I weep in the heart that we now have a situation in Edo State where you don't know what to expect from governor any time he takes over the microphone. He has finished abusing any other person; he is now abusing the President of the country and abusing even members of the conference committee that was put together in the interest of all.

This is sad and I condemn it in a very strong term. This governor is an uncultured man. You see, your opinion is okay to the extent that you are not also saying the things that will affect the opinion of others."
