4 new private universities were yesterday licensed by the Federal Government. They were granted provisional licenses by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its meeting in Abuja. The government said the action was in response to the increasing demand for university education in the country.

The institutions are: Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State; Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State; Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State; and Baze University, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

This brings the number of universities in the country to over hundred.

Addressing reporters after FEC meeting chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Minister of Education Prof. Rukayat Rufai said the universities met the requirements as contained in the law guiding the establishment of private universities.

The proprietors, she added, "have indicated interest to establish private universities and they have satisfied the requirements as contained in Act 9 of 1993 for the establishment of private universities."
