ILO to collaborate with Nigeria to fight human trafficking

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has assured President Goodluck Jonathan's administration of its unflinching support to fight trafficking in human beings from Nigeria to Europe.

 

This was disclosed in Abuja by Mrs. Sina Chuma-Mkandwire, the Director (ILO) Country Office for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Gambia and liaison office for ECOWAS, while presenting eight different publications on Human Trafficking and Forced Labour to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

 

She maintained that ILO will continue to collaborate with Nigeria on the implementation of the European Union (EU) funded project to enhance the cooperation with Federal Government of Nigeria in the fight against trafficking in human beings from Nigeria to Europe (ECTIP) under which different training manuals, reports and a code of conduct for private employment Agencies were developed and printed.

Chuma-Mkandawire presented different publications listed  below for official use of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity to enable the officials to work better on issues of forced labour, human trafficking and to protect migrant workers' rights in Nigeria within the spirit of the ECOWAS free movement protocols.

a)    400 copies of 'Forced Labour and Human Trafficking: Handbook for Labour Officers/Inspectors in Nigeria'.

b)    400 copies of 'trafficking for Forced Labour: How to monitor the Recruitment of Migrant Workers'.

c)    50 copies of Forced Labour and Human Trafficking: A Toolkit for Trade Unions in Nigeria'.

d)    50 copies 'Training Manual on Human Trafficking for Law Enforcement Agents "Victims focused'.

e)    40 copies of 'Code of Conduct for Private Employment Agencies'.

f)    50 copies of 'Desk Research to identify available Statistical Data on Labour Migration and Human Trafficking in Nigeria'.

g)    1 copy of the publication on 'Cases of severely exploited Nigerian citizens and other forms of exploitation (in the English and Italian languages).

The Director Planning, Analysis, Research and Statistics (PARS) in the Ministry, Mr. Zacchaeus Atte, while receiving the publications on behalf of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu,  thanked the ILO for the gesture and promised the Judicious utilization of the publications.

He added that the publications will enable the  Ministry officials to work better on issues of forced labour, human trafficking and to protect migrant workers' rights in Nigeria within the spirit of ECOWAS free movement, this he observed will heighten the existing relationship between ILO and the Ministry while looking forward to further collaboration in the future.
