The Mo Ibrahim Foundation offers GDAI – PhD Scholarships for African students at SOAS in UK. Scholarship is provided in the field of Governance for Development in Africa. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The scholarship is on a part?present form and it provides for Fees for three years, and for accommodation and living cost for the first year only. Scholarship candidates will be assessed based on their intended research, academic merit and referencesThe application deadline is 30 April 2014.

Eligibility: -Domicile/Residency: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub?Saharan Africa.

-Eligible Programmes: PhD Programme (Full?time) Research undertaken by scholarship applicants must directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa.

Scholarship Description: The Centre offers one PhD scholarship to African residents. In order to apply for the PhD programme and the scholarship you would need to fill in the SOAS PhD online application form. Please state on the form that you wish to be considered for one of these scholarships and that admission tutors are kindly asked to liaise with the Centre of African Studies on this. In addition to the application form, you would need to send me a proposal of the intended research in 1000 words max. This should outline the research objectives, appropriate methods and research relevance. It should also make clear the relation between the proposed research and the core themes of governance and development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Duration of award(s): Scholarship is offered for three years.

What does it cover? The scholarship is on a part-present form and it provides for Fees for three years, and for accommodation and living cost for the first year only.

Selection Criteria: Scholarship candidates will be assessed based on their intended research, academic merit and references. SOAS is committed to accepting only those scholarship candidates who can demonstrate an ability to complete a PhD within three, or at most, four years.

Notification: The Advisory Panel expects to have made a final decision on the Mo Ibrahim Foundation PhD Scholarships by May of each year. All scholarship candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.
