Shola Amoebi Hopes For 'Monster' Year

Shola Ameobi is hoping that the year 2014 will bring about a turnaround at club and international level in his football career.

According to the 32-year-old striker, Newcastle United are believing they "can achieve something special" in the coming year in spite of the setback of Boxing Day against Barclays Premier League leaders, Arsenal.

"Our confidence is sky high at the moment and that's probably highlighted by the fact we were disappointed not to have got something from the Arsenal game.

"We're going into 2014 thinking we can achieve something special and that's pretty incredible when you look at where we were 12 months ago.
.
"It's great to have a squad that's together and wants to get better.
.
"It's going to be tough to finish in the top four, five or six but we'll give it a go," the Newcastle United man was quoted in The Sun as saying.

Ameobi will be hoping Newcastle start off 2014 by returning to winning ways at West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day.

However on the international front, Ameobi knows he is in contention for one of the 23 spots of Nigeria's squad to the 2014 Fifa World Cup and is keen to make the cut.

It could well be his first and only appearance at the World Cup finals as he is highly regarded by Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi.

"From a personal point of view, 2014 could be really special for me, and I'm also starting the New Year with the hope of playing in a World Cup finals," said Ameobi.

Ameobi has made 13 appearances for the Magpies this term but is yet to score a goal while he has played five times for Nigeria's Super Eagles and scored twice since his international switch in 2012.

His club and country have done well in 2013 so far so they can both continue with that good form in 2014.
