Job Title: Head – Internal Control

Location: Lagos, Nigeria

Job Summary: To review accounting systems and internal controls; ensure compliance and adherence to management policies; safeguarding the company's assets; ensure that operations are carried out in an efficient and effective manner; carry out detailed examination of transactions to ensure reasonableness, accuracy, and validity.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Keep a record of management policies for the purpose of monitoring compliance.

• Setting up procedures/policies for monitoring usage of company assets.

• Ensure that management information for decision making are timely, reliable and complete.

• Providing information to the external auditors on any issues in his capacity as head of internal control department

• Conduct periodic visits to area offices to ensure compliance and adherence to laid down policies and procedures.

• Review of company's investment portfolio for accountability purposes

• Identifies control gaps and opportunities for improvement.

• To plan, organize and carry out the internal controls function including the preparation of an audit manual.

• Conduct risk assessment of departments/functional areas in accordance with timelines.

• Conduct audit testing of potential risk areas and identify reportable issues.

• To conduct any reviews or tasks requested by Management.

• Develop and implement appropriate operating procedures to ensure compliance with the Labour Law

• Ensure compliance with existing laid down financial policies and procedures, identifying & proposing modifications as needed.

• Monitor and provide advice to management to minimize risk resulting from poor internal controls.

• Identify areas of financial and administrative strengths and weaknesses and develop best practices.

• Review the responses to internal and external audit management letter queries to ensure that recommendations are implemented; follow-up on audit action plan to ensure that all action items are resolved before the next annual audit.

• Ensure proper documentation and approval of all financial transactions.

• Ensure that all transactions are properly classified, registered and posted.

• Ensure that monies received are promptly receipted and lodged within 24 hours.

• Ensure that all assets are properly accounted for and physically monitored.

• To report to both the audit committee and management on the policies, programmes, and activities of the department.

• To make recommendations on the systems and procedures being reviewed, report on the findings, make recommendations and monitor response and implementation.

• To review and report on accuracy, timeliness and relevance of the financial and other information that is provided for management.

• To report on the value for money in all activities in the organisation with special regard to economy, efficiency and effectiveness.

• To work with all departments to ensure a system is in place which ensures that all major risks of each division are identified and analysed for corrective action on a continuous basis.

• Coordinate budget preparation for te Group

• To conduct any review or investigation requested by the chief executive or the audit committee with high level of objectivity and integrity.

• Relate budgeted performance with actual performance and analyse the variance.

• Makes detailed observations, analyses data and interprets results.

• Evaluate and Monitor completion of tasks and projects.

• Attend training and develop relevant knowledge and skills

• Carry out any task assigned to you from time to time by the Managing Director or Management.

Competency and Skill Requirements:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• A true professional possessing the highest ethical and moral standards

• Ability to maintain a positive attitude at all times

• Ability to address issues and effect change effectively

• Experience in writing internal policies and procedures and process evaluation and documentation

• Strong analytical skills. Detail oriented and ability to work and interpret figures and other financial

• Information.

• Effectively work with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Key Performance Indicators

•   A demonstrated knowledge of finance, accounting and internal controls

•   Compliance with laid down policies and procedures by all sections in the organisation.

•   Accuracy and reliability of records

•   Effective system and procedures that supports accomplishment of company goals and objectives

•   Elimination/reduction of any incidence of fraud/malpractices

•   Elimination/reduction of audit queries from the External Auditor and regulatory bodies on financial matters

•   Staff satisfaction level

•   Quality of workforce

•   Effectiveness and adequacy of general administration support  

Experience and Qualifications:

• 3 – 5 years experience in accounting, finance, Auditing or Business Management

• First degree in business, accounting or other finance related discipline from a reputable tertiary institution

• A relevant professional qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CPA, CFE, FRM).

• Professional certificate/training is an added advantage.
