Al-Hikmah University Students Injures VC During Protest

The students of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin were involved in a violent fisticuffs with some people believed to be men of the Nigerian Police Force as they protested the arrest of a second year female student of the institution.

It was gathered that the security men who were on mufti came into the school on Wednesday to arrest the student and were confronted by a group of student who thought they were kidnappers.

The confrontation turned violent as the plain clothed security men insisted on taking the student away while the students insisted on proper identification and notification to the school's authority.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkaree, while attempting to calm the situation sustained injuries.

The VC explains: "What happened this morning is a case of misjudgment by authority that is supposed to be enforcing laws. They came to the campus and tried to arrest a female student. We had to intervene because students insisted that students can not be arrested from campus without letting the authorities know."

When contacted, the Kwara State Police PRO, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, expressed surprise at the event and stated that the plain-clothe security men on Monday reported to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabo, that they came to Kwara State for an investigation and they were directed on procedures to follow believing that they would do so.

Meanwhile, peace has returned to the institution as the police carries on with the investigation.
