A match against any of the 'Big Four' is enough to make Wigan fans run for the hills, but after shipping nine goals against Manchester United and Arsenal already this season, the prospect of facing the Blue machine of Chelsea looks even more daunting than usual.

It is a stat that Latics fans must get tired of hearing, but it is now a whopping 34 Premier League matches and counting without as much as a solitary victory against any of the top four.

So Chelsea are the last team Premier League rookie boss Roberto Martinez would want to face as he deals with the strain of managing a side that are wobbling after a promising start.

The successful brand of crisp and incisive passing the Spaniard cultivated whilst at Swansea is not suited to a top-flight relegation battle and that is what will lie ahead for Wigan unless his side can start a flood of goals at one end and stem the flow at the other.


Chelsea on the other hand crushed Tottenham last week and have barely broken sweat this season as Carlo Ancelotti has quietly gone about his business of moulding Chelsea into a relentless winning machine.

Three points at the DW Stadium would extend Chelsea's club record run of successive Premier League victories to 12, leaving them just two shy of equalling the record Arsenal set in 2002.
