David E. Davis, Jr., widely acknowledged as the dean of American automotive journalism, died on Sunday following cancer surgery. David E. (the E. stood for Evan, and nobody ever called him Dave), moved on a fast track, founding Automobile magazine in 1986 and working at all four major car titles in the course of a long career. At once outrageous and respected, Davis sparked controversy about cars, issues and celebrities in an impressive body of work that spanned six decades.
