Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds MD Fellowships are awarded to outstanding medical students who are prepared to interrupt their studies for at least 10 months to conduct an experimental MD thesis in basic biomedical research.

Purpose:
To provide gifted young medics with the opportunity of pursuing ambitious research projects in internationally renowned laboratories.

The fellowship
• MD fellowships are granted for 10–12 months, an extension of up to 3 months is possible.
• The monthly stipend amounts to 900 euros in countries of the European Monetary System and to 1,200 euros in Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. Depending on the cost of living, all further countries are grouped into one of these categories. In most countries, fellows are paid an additional 150 euros per month as flat-rate for research-related costs.
• In addition, MD fellowship holders may receive travel allowances to enable them to present their data e.g. at international scientific meetings.

Who can apply for an MD fellowship?

• Medical students studying in Germany who wish to pursue an experimentally demanding and hypothesis-driven MD thesis project in basic biomedical research.
• Applicants should not be older than 24 years and are eligible if they gained good marks (2.0 or better) in the first section of the medical examination ("Erster Abschnitt der Ärztlichen Prüfung") and during their subsequent studies.
• Applicants must interrupt their studies and change their working place (institution and city) for the entire duration of the MD fellowship, i.e. for a period of at least 10 months.

Application for a PhD Fellowship

How to Apply:
•   Applications may be submitted at any time, but must reach the Foundation at least three months prior to the proposed commencement of the MD fellowship.
•   The entire application, including the project proposal, should be completed in English by the applicant personally.
•   We advise all applicants to consult their scientific supervisor before submitting their application.

Selection:
All applications are evaluated according to the following three criteria:
    (i)  the achievements of the applicant;
    (ii)  the scientific quality of the proposed MD project;
    (iii)  the scientific standard of the laboratory in which the proposed MD project is to be pursued.
