Unidentified gunmen, at the weekend, trailed an Islamic scholar in Zaria, simply identified as Mallam Jafar, and shot him at his Jushi ward residence.

Although no person or group has so far claimed responsibility for the killing, his younger brother, Mohammed Bello, had alleged that the gunmen were sent to the cleric.

The killers were said to have driven to  the cleric's house in two expensive cars and sought audience with him after returning home from the mosque, where he performed the Tarawi prayers.

Bello told newsmen that the killers, numbering about  four, came  in two Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) and sought audience with the late cleric.

"Immediately he came out from the house to attend to the killers, one of them asked him to move further so that they could talk in camera. But as soon as they moved to a nearby corner, he pulled out a gun and asked Mallam Jafar to surrender his car's key.

"Mallam gave him the key without any resistance and as  he turned to walk back to his house, the killer shot him on his neck and he died," he said.

Although, the police in the area could not be reached for comment, people living near the area alleged that it was a robbery case.
