Protest: Court grants 48 Tai Solarin varsity students bail

   IJEBU-ODE — An Ijebu-Ode Magistrate's Court yesterday granted bail to 48 students of Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, who were accused of staging a violent protest over alleged killing of their colleague by the police.

They were arraigned on five count charge of rioting, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace and destruction of property belonging to the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Council.

The students were arrested on July 27, for allegedly staging a violent protest, which threw the whole Ijebu-Ode Township into pandemonium over the killing of one of their colleagues by the police.

The 17 counsel for the accused led by Mr Taiwo Odumosu in moving the bail application urged the court to admit the students on bail on self recognition.

Odumosu explained that since the accused were students of TASUED, who do not want to lose their admission they would not jump bail.

The lead counsel, who was supported by others, urged the court to admit the students on bail and said that they had all learnt their lessons, while in prison custody.

The Magistrate, Mr Anthony Araba, ruling on the bail application, said that students should know that there were no separate laws that governs students from the law that governs society as a whole.

Araba said that the laws of the land, including the 1999 constitution and criminal code law, prescribed punishment for anyone who contravenes the law.

The magistrate warned the students to desist from acts capable of destroying their future.

Araba, however, granted each of the students bail in the sum of N100,000 and one surety with evidence of two years tax payment to the state government.

The case was subsequently adjourned till August 25.
