China's state companies advance billion-dollar oil and banking deals while India's plans are now on hold. It has recently been reported that new INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, is seeking N55.6 billion to compile a “substantially more credible” voters’ register for the 2011 general elections. The new kid on the block has come under blistering attack for daring to mention the amount needed for the project. The attacks are grounded in the simple belief that the money needed is too much. I am not sure what Prof. Attahiru Jega means with “substantially more credible” voters register and he will have to explain that to Nigerians. Despite this observation, the federal government must immediately make the needed money available to him.

The hullabaloo about abolishing zoning is completely misconceived.  The call to abolish zoning seriously underestimates and ignores the complex political character of Nigeria.  Nigeria is not a Federation by accident.  It is a Federation because it is composed of diverse peoples from different ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds.  Nigeria is a divided society.  Federalism is the only known political system that accommodates divisions and diversity.

Emeka Ugwonye, the Washington DD -based lawyer who made a habit of using libel lawsuits to suppress public debate about the controversial sale of properties belonging to the Nigerian embassy in Washington DC and Maryland, has lost a second lawsuit at the Maryland Circuit Court for Montgomery.

 Mr. Ugwuonye had sued Professor Mobolaji Aluko at the US District court regarding a comment the professor made in a popular chatroom,"Naijapolitics", following the publication by Saharareporters of a detailed report about the controversial sale of the embassy's properties.
