NLC begins rally today in Lagos, Ibadan

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will this morning in Lagos State and Ibadan in Oyo State start a sensitization rally to mobilise Nigerians against the removal of fuel subsidy by government on New Year's Day. Acting General Secretary of the NLC Comrade Owei Lakemfa told Daily Trust in a telephone interview last night that all the state chapters of the NLC had been put on alert and will commence a general strike action on a date to be named after a meeting tomorrow with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).  

Lakemfa said "we have told Nigerians to start mobilizing in their communities and in their areas for a general strike and shutdown. On Wednesday the NLC NEC and that of TUC will be meeting to give directive on date.  

"But meanwhile, people are free to start their protest and indeed, by now they have started. In Kano State students were on the streets today (Monday) from various institutions. In Lagos tomorrow (today) we are organising a sensitization rally and protest; it will also take place in Ibadan. People have contacted us from Benue that they want to organise protest there too.

"Today (Monday) too, some Nigerians protested in Abuja and soldiers were used on motorbikes to crash through them. They were led by a former member of the House. Anyway, the thing is that we are organising and we are mobilising and we are getting ready."
