The Organization for Communal Welfare and Development (OCWD) is a nonprofit and nongovernmental organization that is committed to improving the economic and social conditions of the poor especially women and children in the rural communities in Nigeria. Their projects range from a revolving microfinance fund linked to a financial literacy and entrepreneurship development program, to sector-specific projects in healthcare, education and environmental sustainability.

About the Job:

The Organization for Communal Welfare and Development (OCWD) is seeking a Research Assistant to help develop, prepare and present a research paper analyzing the trajectory of rural based microfinance in Southeastern and Southwestern Nigeria and its effect on various health, education and governance indicators. The position will involve both quantitative and qualitative analysis as well as statistical and field research.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

•   Defining, developing, and undertaking creative, policy-oriented research using your own original research;

•   Work closely with OCWD's local and expatriate staff to carry out research projects;

•   Publishing an working papers, briefings, journal articles and press releases targeted to policy makers, academics and the general public;

•   Tracking policy developments in relevant areas;

•   Engaging in related policy outreach activities and speaking engagements;

•   Participating in the preparation of foundation and other types of grant proposals;

•   Developing a framework to assist in putting the aforementioned research into practice.

Qualifications:

•   Doctoral degree in economics, international development, political science or a related discipline;

•   At least 1-3 years of relevant experience in a research environment or in an institutional setting or policy organization;

•   Record of applying quantitative research methods to real-world problems to identify practical and action-oriented solutions;

•   Demonstrated ability to take a project to completion;

•   Excellent oral and written communication skills;

•   Ability to work independently within a small, closely-knit organization and to contribute to the development of new initiatives;

•   In-country development experience and/or experience in an operational development organization a plus;

•   Good humor and collegiality essential.
