Espoo District Court has fined a nurse and a midwife for bodily injury after they had fed three two-day-old infants a strong cleaning fluid, chlorhexidine, which they mistook for sugar solution.

The harshest punishment, 60 income-linked day-fines, was meted out to the nurse who injected the fluid into a baby's mouth. The fine will amount to 1,200 euros based on the nurse's income.

The judge found that the nurses had not taken adequate care in checking the labels of the bottles before administering the contents.

A midwife was fined 40 day-fines, amounting to 240 euros, for three counts of bodily harm. Another midwife had charges against her thrown out.
