Mercy is what God does for us. Mercy discounts the economic sense of love and faith and care for a person and lives out of a divine sense of love instead. Mercy gives a human being who does not "deserve" love, love. And why? Because, the Scriptures answer, God know of what we are made. The fact is that we are all made of the same thing: clay, the dust of the earth, the frail, fragile, shapeless thing from which we come and to which we will all return some day. We are all capable of the same things. Our only hope is that when we are all sitting somewhere bereft, exposed, outcast, humiliated and rejected by the rest of society, someone, somewhere will "reach out a hand and lift us up."More...

Reuel Marc Gerecht, a Middle East expert and storied former CIA operative, has called, along with Fox News' Glenn Beck, for a litmus test to be given to Muslims anxious to build a mosque near Ground Zero.In a classic conspiracy-riddled "chalk talk" this week, Beck reversed his earlier defense of the Islamic center on Constitutional grounds. He rallied his minions against the mosque and cited David Horowitz' test that "the fastest way to find out who you are dealing with" is to ask a Muslim to denounce Hamas. Fox's pontificator-in-chief then made a few splendid leaps of logic to show his viewers that Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is in favor of Hamas' ambitions to kill all the Jews.More...

Down in Florida, the Democratic primary race between Kendrick Meek and Jeff Greene has turned into a full-tilt frenzy over what did or did not go on aboard Greene's alleged-batterer-of-Belize's-coral-reefs yacht, the Summerwind. In the past few weeks, we've heard a lot of stories about Greene's yacht.  Two descriptive terms tend to jump out at you: The first is "party boat": the St. Petersburg Times' Adam C. Smith reminds readers today of an account from Gregory Zuckerman's book, The Greatest Trade Ever, that describes a Summerwind jaunt to the Black Sea that involved "Ukrainian strippers" and "stewardesses from coastal towns" that were hired as crew-slash-massage therapists.More...
