Tunis - Tunisia's interior minister has announced the lifting of a ban on demonstrations in a symbolic downtown boulevard.

The decision follows widespread outrage over the violent police dispersal with teargas and truncheons of a demonstration on Bourguiba Avenue on Monday.

Ali Larayedh also announced on Wednesday the creation of a commission to investigate the clashes, which resulted in many injured.

Members of parliament from both the ruling coalition and the opposition have strongly condemned the violence used to disperse the demonstration of non-governmental organisations and unions on the occasion of Martyrs' Day.

The popular uprising that brought down Tunisia's dictatorship a year ago was focused on the tree-lined avenue, which has been a forum for protests since. - Sapa-AP
