FG okays take-off of Police academy for award of degrees

Kano – President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the immediate take-off of Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, as a degree- awarding institution from September.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Navy-Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd), announced the plan  in Wudil, yesterday, during an inspection of on-going projects in the institution.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the minister, who was accompanied by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, said the Federal Government would provide funds to ensure the institution's smooth take-off.

He said: "We will commit funds that are necessary to ensure the completion of all the on-going projects in the college so as to enable it become a degree-awarding institution.

"It will be a police academy which can be utilised not only by Nigerian police; West African police officers can come here to obtain their degrees."

Also, Abubakar said that the Nigeria Police Force was  facing the greatest challenges in its history. He said this was why it had become imperative for officers and men to be more professional on how to handle the challenges.

He said: "I'm not expecting you to fail me because I know my men are highly ready to save this country from the daunting security challenges.

"The Federal Government has provided all necessary support we require to achieve excellence and I know you will do it."

He, however, warned the students that the era of people following the shortcut after failing their examinations to continue and even graduate as police officers was over.

Earlier, the Commandant of the college, AIG Shehu Babalola, had  commended the IGP for declaring a state of emergency on all Nigerian Police Training Institutions.

He urged the IG to address some of the challenges facing the institution, including the lack of functional vehicles for patrol and educational visits.
