An MIT spinoff has developed a power amplifier technology that minimizes power by a huge percentage. An estimation of the technology review points to up to 20 million per second.

Here is a simple explanation on how the technology minimize power in smartphones. Power amplifiers are among the main components of smartphone circuitry and play important functions including converting electricity into radio signals. It however consumes power in two basic modes: standby and output signal for sending out digital data. Such a chip wastes more than 65 percent of its energy and this is where the technology come in.

The new amplifier design is a fast electronic gear box that examines different voltages that can be sent across the chip's transistors and chooses the one that reduces power consumption. This method called asymmetric multilevel out-phasing, does this up to 20 million times per second.
