Robotic arm controlled by Human thoughts

A study reported in the Lancet medical journal reveals a technology accomplished by a team of experts who mentioned that it was unprecedented and that the success was a remarkable achievement.

A paralysed woman's thoughts were used to control a robot arm to grasp and move a variety of objects just like a normal arm. Using brain implants in the cortex of her brain, pulses of electricity in the brain are then translated into commands to move the arm, which bends at the elbow, wrist and could grab an object.

The woman who participated in this test was diagnosed with spinocerebellar degeneration 13 years ago and progressively lost control of her body. She is now unable to move her arms or legs. This technology and the related attempts to give the prosthetic arm a sense of touch is aimed to help her and many other people who are paralysed away to do some things on their own.

With several researchers working on biometric technologies all over the world, paralysed patients might benefit from these attempts.
