News Flash - Breaking News: Fears, as fire hits Ikeja City Mall (Shoprite)

Shoppers at the Ikeja City Mall, popularly known as Shoprite, were on Tuesday, panic-stricken as another fire outbreak which threatened normal business activities was recorded in a section of the mall.

The incident which occurred at a clothing store, Mr Price, left many shoppers, as well as workers scampering for safety, even as the management of the mall ensured that everyone in the mall was evacuated, while officers of the Lagos State Fire Service promptly put out the inferno.

Operations Manager of the mall, Mr Steve Idornigie, while speaking with the Reporters, said the fire started at about 11:15a.m, but added that it was as a result of a spark from a power point but that it did not extend beyond the shop before it was put out.

Idornigie said "we called the fire service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and to the glory of God, the fire was put out without extending beyond the shop."

He disclosed that there was no causality, adding that, an evaluation was going on to ascertain the level of damage.

"At the moment, we cannot give the precise details of the damage done. The affected shop sells clothes and during the extinguishing process, water must have damaged some clothes, but the extent of damage is not known yet.

Meanwhile, head of Logistics, LASEMA, Mr Femi Giwa, who led the team to the scene, said he was there with his people within five minutes and the fire which he described as 'pocket-sized', was put out.

Giwa also appealed to Nigerians to be conscious of electrical sparks which he said might lead to more fire incidents in the future. "Nigerians must ensure they switch off their electric appliances before leaving their homes, shops, offices and places of worship, especially during this dry season," he said.

As at the time the Nigerian Tribune visited the mall, scores of shoppers, including workers of various companies, which had business operations in the mall were seen loitering within the premises of the shopping mall for over three hours (46)
