Slain Guber Aspirant Buried Amid Tight Security

THE remains of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) Governorship aspirant in Borno State, Modu Fannami Gubio, and the chairman of Ngala local government, Alhaji Goni Modu Sheriff, were buried at the Gwange cemetery, Maiduguri, amid tight security yesterday.

Gubio, Goni and five others were killed on Friday by unidentified gunmen; though some people in the state claimed they were members of the Boko Haram sect.

Meanwhile, governors of the Southeast have condemned the killing, urging the federal government to investigate the incident exhaustively.

Rising from a meeting in Enugu, yesterday, the governors, who also bemoaned rising incidences of killings in Borno, said the incident has thrown up fresh challenges to security in the country.

In a statement released after the meeting and signed by chairman of the forum and Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, they said that arresting and prosecuting persons behind the incident is the only way to curb the violence, stressing that unless this is done, the situation get worse as the country approaches general elections.

The remains of the slain ANPP flagbearer were lowered into the grave at about 9.30am on Saturday, as Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, fought back tears.

Leading the funeral prayers, Imam Adam Asil Ibn Kyari noted: "It is the Al-mighty God that provides life and takes it away whenever he wishes.  We pray that the souls of Gubio and Goni may rest in perfect peace, and their sins forgiven by God."

The Director of Press Affairs to the governor, Alhaji Usman Chiroma said: "We are still in deep shock over the demise of these distinguished sons of Borno State." He noted that the government would make its position on the killings known in no distant time.

The third-day prayers for the duo have been fixed for Monday, Januaray 31. Dignitaries at the funeral included governor Sheriff and his deputy, Alhaji Adamu Shettima Dibal; the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Ibn El-Kanemi; emirs of Dikwa and Uba; Senators Maina Ma'aji Lawan, Kaka Mallam Yale and some members of the National and State Houses of Assembly.
