News - Nigeria, Canada pledge to boost education

 THE Federal Government and the Canadian government have stressed the need for the strengthening of ties in the area of education. Of particular concern to the Nigerian government is the enhancement of university education as a tool for the development of high-level manpower for the country's economic growth.

The two governments made known their intentions at the opening of the two-day Canadian Education Fair (CDN EDUFAIR) in Abuja Monday.

On hand to declare the fair open was the Canadian Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Edward Fast, while Chief Nyesom Wike, Nigeria 's Minister of State for Education represented the country.

Wike described the education fair as part of the Federal Government's liberalisation policy of higher education as a major tool of quality training for the development of manpower, especially from the highly rated Canadian universities.

On its part, he said the Nigerian government under him has made huge investments in university education with a view to bringing them up to international standards.

Forty-seven leading universities and colleges are participating in the fair, which is expected to close today. Also on hand were the Canadian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Chris Cooter and his Nigerian counterpart to Canada, Chief Ojo Madueke, among other high level officials.
