News - Balarabe Musa backs Bakare, craves action against graft, others

 FORMER Governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has thrown his weight behind the views of Pastor Tunde Bakare, who said on Monday that President Goodluck Jonathan should quickly redress the nation's economic problems and corruption at the corridors of powers to prevent revolution in the country.

Musa, while supporting Bakare's comments that it was a drastic revolution that brought corrective measures to Ghana when that country was on the brink of collapse, said: "I will not rule out such thing in Nigeria if Jonathan's government continues to watch the situation in Nigeria get worse. A revolution in Nigeria is possible.

"People have a variety of ideas on how to solve the problem of Nigeria. The problem has to be solved. And it is quite clear that normal democratic solution would not work because those who are directly responsible for the negative state of the nation are too powerful and too callous that they would not allow a democratic solution.  But, there must be a solution. What Bakare is saying is not impossible."

On whether Nigeria is ripe for such revolution as it happened in Ghana, he said: "At the time it took place in Ghana, the country was not considered ripe for that.

"Secondly, a revolutionary solution comes about in its own way. It is not something that anybody can predict, the only thing we can say is that once the situation in a country is so negative, anything can happen."

Musa also faulted the Federal Government's profile on accountability, saying that, "even a credible government should not toy with some of the challenges that its citizens are bringing forward to public glare, particularly those bothering on corruption and squandering of public funds. They should come out to defend themselves publicly."

He highlighted issues that Dr. Oby Ezekwesili raised and advised Jonathan not to sweep them under the carpet, in the interest of the country. On Ezekwesili's challenge that the Federal Government should defend itself on allegation of squandering the nation's foreign reserves, Musa said: "The government has not come out to defend itself against such mounting allegation.

"And the surprising thing is that she was an insider and making this call, therefore the call must be taken seriously. Remember that even former President Olusegun Obasanjo himself, who is known to be connected with this government, has said that the only solution is a revolution.

"He is not a party in this government, so it is not so obvious that he is comfortable with the way and manner things are going. But he said the solution to the negative state of the country is a revolution. This is a former head of state and a civilian president, who was very much entrenched in this government."

He added: "What advice would I give Jonathan and his government on the state of this country? There is no point advising them because they would not listen, they are more comfortable and would not do anything. The

President himself has said it openly that all public institutions in the country had collapsed.

"He said so, he was aware of the negative state of the nation and he has a responsibility to do something drastic about it. If he refuses to do anything, there is no point advising him.

"He should have learnt lessons from the public protest by Nigerians against the oil subsidy problem and accept that Nigerians can still be mobilised against the negative state of the nation."
