The Carnegie Corporation offers postgraduate scholarships for African Students in South Africa. The scholarship is tenable at University of Cape Town. Scholarships are available in the field of Urban Engineering and Water Engineering. The PhD students must have enrolled at the University of Cape Town. Two scholarships are offered at R150 000 per annum. The scholarship is renewed annually. The maximum duration of scholarship is three years. Send complete application by 22 March 2013.

Study Subject(s): Applications are invited from candidates in the areas of research to be carried out in: 1. Urban Engineering, focused on the particular contribution that civil engineers might make to cities of the present and future, that may lie within the research areas of the more established sub-disciplines of transportation engineering, water engineering and others, but which may not be sufficiently addressed by these existing sub-disciplines alone. An element of the Urban Engineering scholarship will be to contribute to our understanding of Urban Engineering in academe and in practice, and to explore how students and future practitioners might be better developed in this field. 2. Water Engineering, focused on hydraulic modelling and/or experimental investigation of dynamic leak behaviour in water distribution systems. Eligibility: -Applicants must qualify for PhD studies at the University of Cape Town. -Preference may be given to students who have already started PhD studies at the University of Cape Town.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The students of Africa can apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship Description: The Carnegie Corporation has provided the University of Cape Town with a grant to support individuals who would like to pursue a Doctoral degree, and who wish to seriously consider pursuing a career in academe in Africa. The intention is to develop a cohort of trainee academics and thereby contribute to growing the next generation of academics in order to strengthen higher education in Africa.

Number of awards offered: Two postgraduate scholarships are available for African students.

Duration of award(s): For new PhD students, the scholarship may be renewed twice for a maximum study duration of three years. Renewal for a student already registered for a PhD may be limited based on the number of years registered.

What does it cover? Each scholarship is valued at R150 000 per annum. Renewal of the scholarship will be considered annually. All renewals will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress, compliance with the conditions of award, and on the availability of funds.

Conditions of Award: Successful candidates will be required to: Indicate, via the letter of application, their understanding of the intent and purpose of the funding programme, as well as their desire to remain in academe in Africa; Register for full-time PhD studies in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town; Undertake substantive, but not excessive, teaching in the Civil Engineering undergraduate programme; Enter into a formal Memorandum of Understanding with her/his supervisor (a pro-forma agreement is available on request); Comply with the University's approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector.

Selection Process: Short-listing and selection will be completed by the Head of Department/Director and a sub-committee of academics within the department. Short-listed applicants will be required to make themselves available for interview.
