OPINION: The Yoruba Culture In The Cancerous Society Of Today

Growing up in Ibadan and attending secondary school there, I remember how our Yoruba classes were;

Yoruba was a "compulsory" subject – studying a Nigerian language was compulsory but it was NEVER part of the 5 MUST pass courses for high school graduation.

So pass or fail Yoruba no one really cares, it actually does you nothing. No repercussions at all.

No one really took it seriously, not the teachers, not the students not the education board. And even the syllabus is mainly about the Yoruba language aspect and not Yoruba history.

Apart from the brief touch on the Yoruba belief system which even the teachers and every student in class consider demonic and would do a sign of the cross or rub their palms across their faces when these God and prophets are mentioned.

It is a society where the Yoruba Gods, prophets and deity system is considered evil. Eshu the man of the cross roads of the Yoruba deity is considered as the biblical devil/Satan, Islamic shaitan etc.

All the other ones are considered as demons, devils, evil spirits etc.

What people go to churches and mosques to pray against, bind and cast out and wage spiritual war against.

Even sometimes physical war, as we say with muslims and christians against the Yoruba worshippers and followers of the "Ololu" masquerade festival who were brutally attacked in Ibadan a couple of years back.

Our society has now become a place where A Yoruba man hates his own self and roots so much that he sides with the invader to destroy his own home and cultures.

This is a really sad tale.

He joins with other men to vilify, demonise and destroy his own ancestral heritage and roots. He joins them in setting his own home ablaze while his family is trapped inside sleeping.

These just brings tears to my eyes. How did we get to this place?Why this much self-hate?

Why don't we want to learn our true history and retrace our steps and roots?Why don't we want to be free from these shackles and slavery?Why don't we have any self-pride, dignity and respect for ourselves?

Alarm bells are ringing! WAKE UP!
