Ogun State - Need for harmonious LG executive, legislature relationship highlighted

All the 236 Councilors across the 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State have been admonished to avoid confrontation with their respective Chairmen. Rather, they must work harmoniously with them in order to achieve the set goals meant to engender socio – economic development and provide dividends of democracy to the people at the grass roots.The State’s helmsman, Senator Ibikunle Amosun gave this charge today in Abeokuta at a one-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to re-orientate the Councilors on their constitutional roles. Describing the Local Government as the tier that was closest to the people, Governor Amosun explained that it was important for both the executive and the legislative to understand their respective roles and work hand in hand for the benefit of their people who elected them into office. “We should be able to appreciate and understand what the law says about our roles, both executive and legislature. Local Government is the most important aspect of government and also in political setting because; they form the grassroots and are acquitted with their people more than anybody.” Amosun observed The Governor said as intermediaries between government and their people, councilors must not fail to perform their responsibilities on checks and balances, but diligently, so as not to be seen as becoming unnecessary clog in the wheel of progress of their respective local government councils.He charged them to make good use of the opportunity provided by the workshop to sharpen their skill and knowledge on their roles and interactions with career officers and political functionaries in their various council areas.Earlier in his welcome address, State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Basorun Muyiwa Oladipo said the workshop was put together to build the capacity of the councilors on their relationships with other stakeholders in order to enhance living standard at the grassroots and make governance at the third tier level satisfying.“This workshop organized by the ministry was aimed at ensuring that the chairmen, councilors and other key personnel in the local government were properly groomed to put up an apt channel of good governance that would stand the test of time” Oladipo submitted.He enjoined them to ensure that adequate collaboration exist among the individual and corporate stakeholders in the local government administration, saying that to attain the objective, critical appraisal of the value system and mode of operations should be put in place.
