Elderson Echiejile Targets Cup History

Elderson Echiejile will hope Sporting Braga win a first major title in 47 years when they battle Porto in today's Portuguese cup final.

Braga have not won a major trophy since they clinched the Portuguese cup in the 1965/66 season and so this year's edition is a big chance for them to rewrite history.

Porto beat Sporting Braga 3-1 in a league fixture on Monday and so this cup tie has afforded Elderson's club an immediate chance to avenge that defeat that could well stop them from playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Porto have won the Portuguese cup 16 times with their last triumph being in the 2010/2011 season.

Nigeria international Elderson, who was part of the squad who won the 2013 Africa cup of Nations in South Africa recently, has yet to win a major honour at club level in Europe since he moved overseas in 2007.

He came close to winning the Coupe de France while with Stade Rennes in 2008 only for them to lose the final 2-1 to Guingamp.
