Yobe Governor Approves N5.1 Billion For LG Projects

The Yobe state Governor Ibrahim Gaidam on Tuesday approved the sum of N5.1 billion for the execution of various developmental projects at the local government level. [caption id="attachment_32997" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Gaidam"][/caption] The approval is sequel to various submissions of a work plans that the governor had asked the Chairmen of the 17 local Government Councils of the state for intervention in critical service areas that have direct impact on the lives of people at the grassroots. A statement by the special adviser to the Governor on Media and Information, Abdullahi Bego indicates that each local government councils will receive the sum of N300 million from the total of N5.1 billion approved by the governor with a directive they have to follow the plan strictly. "As part of ongoing effort to improve living conditions for people in rural areas, His Excellency Governor Gaidam is committed to ensuring that basic social services, including potable water supply, functional primary school infrastructure, primary health care and sanitation, etc. are made more readily available and accessible to people at the grassroots," Mr Bego said. The approval brings the total to nearly N11 billion in such special interventions in a little over one year as it could be recalled that in 2012, the governor approved over N5.2 billion for the local government councils to undertake similar special projects within their areas. The statement further said areas the councils will pay attention will include drilling of additional boreholes and hand pumps, repair of primary school classrooms and construction of new ones, construction of culverts and drainages, repair and improvement of dispensaries and the provision of drugs and consumables to improve primary health care, among others. A committee has been set up by the governor to monitor and report the implementation and work plan compliance by the local government councils. In a related development, the Governor has also approved the sum of N786, 254, 879.00 for the payment of gratuities and death benefits for various categories of retirees and their next of kin for the year 2013. In 2012, the sum of N602, 757, 608.00 was approved by the governor in similar payments, bringing the total to N1.389 billion for 2012 and 2013. "As at today, there are no outstanding gratuity payments that have not been settled by the administration and the payment of the gratuity once again demonstrates the commitment of the Gaidam administration to the welfare of workers in the state. The statement urges state workers to continue to work hard for the overall transformation of the state.
