Ogun State - Ogun Haulage Law: Stakeholders Express Readiness for Implementation

 Stakeholders in the haulage business in Ogun State have expressed readiness to continue paying relevant fees directly into the coffers of government so that its developmental efforts will be sustained.

   An indication on this was brought to the fore in Abeokuta at a stakeholders’ forum organized by the State House of Assembly over the proposed law to amend the State Commercial Vehicle (Road Haulage) law 2006.     Those who spoke at the forum including President of the State Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (OGUNCCIMA) Prince Bayo Ikujenyo, President, State Chapter of the Truck Owners and Granites Association of Nigeria, Hon. Lekan Adegun, representatives of the police, other stakeholders in the haulage and transportation business amongst others however urged government to fix a fee that could be afforded by owners of all categories of vehicles in the haulage business.     They lauded the Assembly and State Government for promoting participatory governance through the forum, saying that the new law would enhance revenue generation for the State to enhance development.     Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Investment, Commerce and industry, Hon. Bowale Solaja, had explained that the forum was convened to brainstorm on how to ensure transparency in the mode of operation of haulage fees collection and payment into the coffers of government, assuring that their views and contributions would be taken into consideration in the proposed law.     In their contributions, other members of the committee, Honourables Olakunle Oluomo and Aina Akinpelu allayed the fears in certain quarters over alleged multiple charges and the attitudes of collecting agents, assuring that the new law would curb such practices.     They also observed that the new haulage law would go a long way in assisting the State to fast track infrastructural development currently going on across the State, saying that government needed to plan ahead of expected population increase which required more infrastructural facilities to be put in place.     Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly says the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration has set in motion needed machineries to ensure that agriculture is restored into its pride of place.     The Speaker, Rt. Hon Suraj Ishola Adekunbi stated this while receiving members of the executive of the National Agricultural Cooperatives Organisation led by its President, Mr John Sanni during a courtesy call.     Adekunbi said the State Government had reinvigorated agriculture in the State through financing and equipment to boost food production and create employment, adding that the efforts would assist farmers to have bountiful returns on their investment.     Commending the organization for ensuring continuity of government’s programmes, he assured them of government’s readiness to partner with it to further enhance agricultural practice in the State.     The Association’s President, Mr John Sanni had said earlier that the organization was established as an intervention to avoid the bureaucratic bottlenecks that killed the previous intervention programmes on agriculture, stating that it helped in distributing agro-inputs like fertilizers and seedlings, tractor hire service and special cooperative societies as well as micro-finance institutions to access funds for agricultural practice.     He commended the State government for according priority to agricultural practice in the State, noting that all the organisation’s intervention programmes would be operational in all the 774 local government areas across the nation.
