Ogun State - Good Governance: OGHA Pledges Continued Collaboration With The Executive Arm

 Lawmakers in Ogun State have restated their preparedness to always compliment efforts of the Executive arm at delivering more dividends of democracy and engender good governance in the State.

The lawmakers intend to do this by passing resolutions and making relevant laws in accordance with best legislative practice as well as embark on enduring projects for the benefit of their constituents.

Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Surajudeen Ishola Adekunbi stated this in Abeokuta at the “Information Officers’ Day” programme as part of the activities marking the 2013 Press Week of the Information Chapel of the Nigeria Union Journalists.

He remarked that since it was inaugurated in 2011, the seventh legislature in the State had successfully passed 11 bills into laws, and 21 motions into resolutions, adding that already, members of the assembly had embarked on and completed several constituency projects including maternity centres, blocks of classrooms and boreholes among others.

Answering a question on the operation of the Freedom of Information Law in the State, the number one lawmaker assured that the legislature would give it an accelerated passage when presented to it by the executive arm.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru underscored the importance of Micro, Small and Medium scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in national development, pointing out that the State Government was not unmindful of this fact.

He noted that the realisation of this and the passion to better the lot of the people informed government’s decision to use the MSME sub-sector as a veritable tool for poverty alleviation.

Otunba Ashiru disclosed that the State was already partnering the Federal Government to establish the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) to drive inclusive economic growth through skills training and development targeted at creating 3.5million direct job and an estimated 5 million indirect jobs between now and 2015.

The Commissioner added that in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, his Ministry had floated N1billion loan scheme, indicating that since its flag off, over N200million had been disbursed to 30 viable cooperative societies. He pointed out that plans had reached an advanced stage to give another sum of N113 million to another batch of 19 cooperative societies also at the interest rate of 7%.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barrister Yusuph Olaniyonu had commended the lawmakers for their diligence and cooperation with the executive arm, a development which he noted had engendered peaceful governance and made it possible for the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration to embark on projects to turn around the fortunes of the State.

He enjoined the Information Officers to be alive to their responsibilities as image makers of the government and its respective agencies, admonishing that they should go all out to give required publicity to the people-friendly activities of the State Government.

The Information Officers who had earlier embarked on a keep fit walk that took off under the Ibara round about bridge later engaged in various forms of games and competitions with winners going home with prizes.
