The University of Ibadan, Nigeria's first and leading university, located in southwest Nigeria and with a student population of 20,000, about 40% of which is made up of postgraduate students, seeks the services of dynamic and experienced scientists to join her academic staff in the Department of Agronomy for exciting academic careers.

Ibadan has a tropical climate and rich ethnic diversity that includes foreigners from different parts of the world. The city of Ibadan is home to four national agricultural research institutes, two national agricultural agencies and an international institute for tropical agriculture –nearly all (are) within 10-15 km from the university.

The Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan runs Bachelor's degree programmes in Crop and Soil Sciences, as well as M.Sc. and PhD programmes in various fields of Agronomy including plant breeding.

The University of Ibadan is the host of the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (PAULESI) of the African Union. In addition to the regular plant breeding graduate students of the University of Ibadan, PAULESI will admit students for M.Sc. and PhD Programmes in plant breeding in September 2012.

Appointees for the positions below, especially the plant breeding staff will be expected to teach regular students of the University of Ibadan and those of the Pan African University.

AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: Farming Systems (50% Teaching, 50% Research)

•   The successful candidate must have a strong background in tropical farming systems with extensive farming systems research experience.

•   The candidate must be able to teach relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses in weed science, tropical crop husbandry, statistics for agronomic experimentation and supervise associated research projects/programmes as well as have demonstrable knowledge of the interplay of these areas with soil fertility, plant nutrition and crop ecology.

•   The appointee will have supervision/supervisory responsibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students and is expected to engage in collaborative research with other staff within the Department of Agronomy as well as other researchers in the university and other research institutions in the sub-region.

•   In addition, the candidate must be able to formulate sound and new research ideas to enhance our current understanding of tropical farming systems.

•   Participation in outreach programmes is a key responsibility of the holder of this position.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in tropical farming systems with extensive farming systems research experience.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications:

•   PhD degree in Farming Systems

•   Postdoctoral experience

•   Teaching experience at the university level

•   Research experience in tropical farming systems

•   Learned publications

•   Ability to attract and manage grants

Remuneration: – Competitive and commensurate with background and experience.  – Accommodation is available on the campus of the University for International Staff.  – Appointees who also teach courses and supervise students' research in the PAU plant breeding programme will, in addition to their salary, earn top-ups.  – Candidates can opt for renewable contract appointments or have their appointments confirmed to retirement age (65 years) after three years based on performance.
