Kunle Afolayan takes Nollywood to Japan

Movie director, Kunle Afolayan's Figurine and Phone Swap are billed for screening as Cinema Africa Film Festival kicks-off this weekend at the Auditorium Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Commenting on the development, multiple award winning Afolayan said: "It is no doubt another groundbreaking opportunity to showcase and promote African cinema to the Asian world. It will also afford many people the opportunity to have a direct experience of films made by Africans and understand our stories as told by us.

"Africa and Africans can no longer allow their stories to be told from Hollywood's perspective. I hope the African and Nigerian communities in Japan would seize this opportunity to enjoy quality film and celebrate a new beginning in African cinema," he said. In recognition of his immense contributions and recognition of his works, the filmmaker will be hosted to a dinner by the Nigerian High Commission in Tokyo.

He would also deliver a speech on the Nigerian motion picture industry and have interviews with major newspapers and the nation's television station, NHK, which will be transmitted to both domestic and global audiences. The event is part of a cultural exchange programme between Africa and Japan. The festival ends on May 23 and is supported by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
