Imoke: South-South governors support state of emergency

Leader of the South-South Governors Forum, Governor, Liyel Imoke, yesterday said that governors of the region are in support of the action taken by President Goodluck Jonathan on the declaration of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in the wake of spiralling security challenges in the country.Gov. Imoke who was at the Presidential Villa to invite the president on to visit his state to commission some projects, also said that the south-south governors, who had earlier met to endorse the president's transformation agenda, added that they also advocated for enlarged support for his declaration of state of emergency.

Observing that the President's move was appropriate and deserved commendation, he debunked speculations that Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) was opposed to the move as he announced that the Forum didn't meet anywhere to discuss that.

"The South-South Governors Forum endorsed the state of emergency by Mr. President and we asked him to be firmed on security, he is enjoying popular support of the security adviser and the National security Council on the state of emergency.

"His actions are positive, the democratic institutions are still in place and I think is very significant and commendable, I think is for us now to throw our support behind the President, encourage him in dealing with this insurgency and ensure those states are returned to normalcy.

He dismissed insinuations that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is in conflict with the president, saying: "I don't think my colleague from Rivers State is having disagreement with president, he might have disagreement with his colleagues governors.

On the call for the return of power to the North in 2015, the governor said: "everybody has the right to agitate and to contest. This is the first time we will have president from the minority and I think it speaks volume about the maturity of our democracy in this country and I think we need to sustain that.
