Arsenal To Spend 70 million Pounds On Summer Transfer

Arsenal's success or failure in making it to the UEFA Champions League next season is unlikely to affect how much money Arsene Wenger is going to have available to spend this , according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

Wenger, who has been promised a transfer war chest of 70 million pounds, low by today's billionaire funded standards, but still attractive enough for a shrewd operator like the Arsenal manager to maximize.

While ensuring their place in the UEFA Champions League for a 16th straight season would no doubt help the Gunners land top targets like Gonzalo Higuain and Stevan Jovetic, it is the Gunners' financial strength which is going to pay for these signings, and not next year's possible TV and matchday revenues.

The Gunners are about 320 million pounds richer having landed two major sponsorship deals with the Emirates and Puma worth 150 and 170 million pounds respectively, and that will help them compete with the Russian and Middle East money that is floating around top English clubs at present.

Wenger has high hopes for next season, and was quoted as having said, Wenger said: "Let's finish well today, and then we'll give ourselves a good potential chance to win the championship next season by doing well in the transfer market."
