Daura attack: Emir appeals to soldiers on victimization

Sequel to the attack on Daura town on Thursday last week that left three soldiers and two policemen dead, the Emir of Daura Alhaji Faruq Umar Faruq, has appealed to soldiers maintaining security not to victimize innocent persons in the area.

The Emir who made the appeal while receiving the commandant of the 3rd Brigade Kano who was on sympathy visit to his palace in Daura, pledged the support of the emirate and the entire people of the area in preventing future occurrence of the incident.

"I want to appeal to our people to remain calm and be law abiding in their conduct so as to guard against any breach of security in the area.

"The security agencies are here to support us in maintaining peace and security and they therefore deserve our total cooperation to function well' he added.

Earlier, the Commandant of the 3rd Brigade Kano, Brigadier-General Abba Iliyasu, said he was in Daura to sympathize with the people over the incident and advised them to always report persons with suspicious characters.

The Commandant gave assurance that his men are ready at all times to ensure to prevent future occurrence of the ugly incident.

Unknown gunmen had launched an attack on the ancient city of Daura where they bombed four banks and the only two police stations in the area and carted away huge sums of money from the banks.

However in the ensuing gun battle between the police and the fleeing gunmen, the police according to the state Commissioner of police, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji, killed four of the gunmen along Dutsi-Mani road while about four AK47 guns and four IEDs were recovered.

Reports from Daura town yesterday indicated that normalcy has returned to the area with people going about their normal businesses while a joint team of security personnel that comprising soldiers and the police manned major roads leading to the town.
