Calm Returns To Olabisi Onabanjo University, Examinations To Start Wednesday

Normalcy has returned to the troubled Ogun State-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) at Ago Iwoye after a student protest against the directive of the management of the institution for regularisation of their studentship in the institution. The students of the institution had as early as 7.30am stormed the gates of the institution which they reportedly locked. Some of the protesting students including the President of the institution's Students Union Government, James Ogunjimi, were reportedly arrested by the police and taken to Ijebu Igbo. The social media was agog on Monday morning with the report that the policemen sent to restore order in the school had shot and killed two students while more than 300 were missing. A picture of a dead male in white singlet having a bullet wound in the stomach also went all over the social media as one of the students killed in the protest. Our reporter who visited the area said, however, that no one was killed in the incident. This was corroborated by the Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Saburi Adesanya: "No student was killed, nothing like that happened," he said. Mr. Adesanya confirmed to Channels Television that some students were arrested during the protest. He explained: "The Security officers, students were at the gate along with my staff; everybody was there and the security officers asked them to leave the gate and they did leave. Some students were trying to prove naughty and they were arrested." The Vice Chancellor asked the students to complete their registration processes as examination would commence on Wednesday 22 May. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, operation, who led a detachment of officers to restore order in the school, Abdulkadir Mohammed, also confirmed that no student was killed during the protest. He said: "No ammunition was fired. If no ammunition was fired how will somebody die?"
