Orji cuts short visit to attend to collapsed building victims.

IMG_6817                        Abia State Government is to set up a panel of enquiry into the immediate and remote causes of the collapse of a three storey building at Agbama, Umuahia which killed some occupants, with a view to forestalling future occurrence.

The State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji disclosed this while inspecting the site of the collapsed building.

Orji, who had to cut short his official trip to Abuja to see things for himself, directed the owner of the building to produce the architect of the building as well as the contractor handling the project to answer to some questions.

The Governor stated that there must be some structural defects that led to the collapse of the building and used the opportunity to sympathize with the families of those who died in the incident.

He described the incident as unfortunate and thanked all those who assisted in the rescue effort including the medicals, security personnel, and companies that provided equipment for the evacuation exercise.

The Governor who later visited survivors receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, condoled with them over the sad incident and donated the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000) to them to cater for their hospital bills.

Theodore Orji of Abia state with some medical personnels and victim of the collapsed building at Agbama housing estate during his visit to the victims at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia Earlier at the site, a representative of the company carrying out the evacuation of the collapsed building, Melborne construction company, Ikenna Balogu said 4 persons died in the incident while 3 are receiving treatment at the hospital, adding that they want to remove every debris at the site to ensure that no one is left.

According to the Director, Abia Estate Development Agency, Mr Onwuchekwa added that the owner of the building, Mr. Obioma Okorie never got approval from the agency but recalled that they rejected the plan and opposed him to the extent that he sponsored youths from the Agbama community to attack Estate Agency staff.
