Youth Development Minister inaugurates governing board of NYSC.

While speaking at the inauguration of the Governing Board yesterday in Abuja, the Minister who noted that their appointment was coming at a time of stock taking and reform of the scheme after 40 years, reminded the Board that they are expected "To provide the NYSC National Directorate with the required overall supervision and guidance in order to strengthen the capacity of the scheme to achieve its noble objectives." Thus, he admonished them to "Develop a harmonious working relationship between the Governing Board and the Management of the scheme on one hand, and sustained an effective collaboration with all governmental institutions on the other hand, for the purpose of creating the desired enabling environment for corps members to benefit from the scheme.

The Minister also took time to provide a cogent working background for the new Board by highlighting some of the challenges facing the NYSC scheme. Some of the problems listed for the attention of the Board include inadequate infrastructure and facilities in the orientation camps; the challenges associated with posting of corps members which has been subjected to abuses resulting in negation of the principles of the scheme; the issue of post-service employment of corps members; and the need to push forward, the reform process of the NYSC National Directorate.

Similarly, Inuwa Abdul-Kadir drew their attention to the task of strictly complying with the principles of due process to which "This administration is totally committed, so that NYSC Directorate will follow suit thereby enthroning prudence, transparency and accountability in the working of the scheme".

Emphasizing on the confidence reposed in the Board, the Minister admonished them to use the opportunity to contribute positively to the advancement of the scheme and the realization of its objectives as a national institution established to promote national unity, peaceful co-existence and patriotic citizenship among our graduate youths.

He however, assured the Board of the support and cooperation of the Ministry as they discharge their onerous responsibility.

The inaugurated Governing Board is chaired by Chief Gordon Bozimo, while members are Mr. Dominic G. Yahaya, Prof. Stella Attoe and Nnamdi Anyaechie.
