Rivers State Government spends billions on malaria control.

The sum of N1.3BN is spent monthly by the Rivers State Government to fight the dreaded malaria scourge.

The Commissioner for Health in the State, Dr. Sampson Parker who represented the Governor, during the 11th State Council on Health meeting in Port Harcourt revealed that about 1 million persons in the State have malaria attack every month.  He advised every citizen of the State to register for the free medical programme and be eligible for the scheme.

Dr. Parker rated the achievement made by the Health sector as 75% and promised to do more.

Governor Amaechi regretted that while the primary health care in the State has improved, the secondary health care is still fledging.   He however promised to build zonal hospitals at strategic local government areas in the State to serve as referral points to the already existing primary health centres in the State.

The State Governor frowned at what he called "out of stock" syndrome being complained in some health centers by doctors and nurses.

He asked, "Should a State that says it has 70% health care service be complaining of drugs?"  He threatened to deal with directors of the central medical store if such complaints continue.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and one-time Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Chief Sampson Agbaru called on all stakeholders to come together and make the health sector work, emphasizing that the administration has spent so much on it.

He hailed the Government for its giant strides in the health sector.
