Nigerians need moral transformation – Cardinal Onaiyekan

The Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal John Onaiyekan yesterday said the impression of Nigerians about the country's anti-graft bodies is that they have lost impact and relevance among the citizens.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of ICPC, Mr. Nta Ekpo, the Archbishop declared that, "I'm sure you are aware that many Nigerians have very little good things to say about ICPC, EFCC and there is a lot of cynicism out there.

"They see these bodies as part of the whole system. They set up a smokescreen that they're doing something about corruption.

"I am sure you have heard the same things too. I do not really share those views, maybe because I know some people working here at ICPC. I encourage you to continue to swim against this current.

"You cannot expect to have a peaceful and secure country when the minimum requirement of good behavior; honesty, integrity, especially in high places are completely neglected. "The best you can have are policemen and soldiers who can keep as many people as they can calm. It reaches a stage where it explodes.

"When it explodes, it has no clear pattern and you end up in a chaotic situation.

"It is just about transformation agenda, better transformation that has content. The content I am more interested in is that, a nation cannot transform if the people cannot go through personal transformation.

"We need moral transformation if the nation must sit down well."
