National Mirror, reporter honoured for roles in healthcare development

The Global Media Limited, publisher of National Mirror and its Kaduna-based correspondent, Mr. Msue Aza, were yesterday honoured with award for quality maternal and child health reportage.

The award organised by international health partner, Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), which held in Kaduna, was to reward some media organisations, journalists and medical professionals in their contribution to healthcare services.

Presenting the award, the Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris, who was represented by the District Head of Kakuri, Alhaji Shehu Tijani, commended the awardees for their contributions towards saving the life of children and expectant mothers.

NURHI Team Leader, Abdullahi Kabir, praised National Mirror, its reporter and other media organisations for reducing maternal deaths through features and routine stories writing.

He said: "National Mirror and its reporter done more than what is expected through quality features and news writing on maternal and child health care issues. You and your organisation are honoured today with two awards.

The award also shows us that, even in the most challenging environments, progress can be made and we have made much progress in the appreciation of childbirth spacing as a critical service for safe motherhood.

"The media is an important ally in any public health situation. It serves the role of being a source of correct information as well as an advocate for correct health behaviours."

The Permanent Secretary in the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, Ardo Zakari, said the government would continue to collaborate with development partners in tackling maternal and child deaths.

Other selected media organizations and its reporters who received the award were Newswatch magazine North- West editor, Mallam Garba Mohammed; Radio Nigeria, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Voice of America, Daily Trust, Kaduna State Media Corporation, Liberty Radio and News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The Council of the Chartered Project Management Institute of Nigeria (CPMIN) also lauded National Mirror management for its commitment to national development.

Giving the commendation yesterday during the Institute's three-day project management seminar and stakeholders' forum on CORPMAN Bill in Abuja, the Secretary of the Steering Committee of CPMIN, Mr. Davies Igberaese, specifically praised the newspaper for partnering the Institute in its maiden seminar with the theme: "Project management as the panacea for national development."

Igberaese said: "We want to particularly thank National Mirror for collaboration with our Institute and making this seminar possible. As you can see, the newspaper is giving us support through publicity and other means which to us, is a commendable gesture."
