The Second National Operator in the country, Globacom, has leveraged on technology to allow its teeming subscribers to read newspapers through Short Messaging Service (SMS) and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).

The mobile newspaper service is Glo-Mpaper.

According to the company's Coordinator, Marketing, Mr. Adeniyi Olukoya, the new service would offer top Nigerian and international news on mobile to all categories of its subscribers, noting that subscribers on the network could access news on the mobile portal by subscribing to news alert via SMS.

"Glo-Mpaper is a service that supplies news from local and international newspapers to subscribers over SMS and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol). The beauty of this service from our stable is that beyond the immediacy of delivering the news items as they break, users can subscribe to at least three different newspapers". Stressing that all categories of subscribers on both the prepaid and postpaid platforms could access the service and would not be required to have any GPRS connectivity to enjoy the service.

"All a subscriber needs to do to access the service is to have a basic handset with Globacom connection. As soon as the pre-paid customer confirms his subscription, the relevant charge will be automatically deducted from the current balance, while a postpaid customer will have the charges added to his or her monthly bill. The service costs only N50 per week".

He maintained that the seamless access to the service was a way to ensure that Nigerians "remain current about the latest news and happenings around them anywhere, anytime." Adding that accessing the service is easy and users could change their newspaper category as many times as they wish free-of-charge, just as the service would be opened to any brand or model of handset. The subscriber simply dials the short code *335# on USSD or sends keyword to 35185 to access the service on SMS and select newspaper.
