Reps lobby Tambuwal over juicy committees

Following the report of possible shake up in the House of Representatives committees leadership by the speaker, Hon Aminu Tambuwal, indications emerged at the weekend that those likely to be affected in the exercise have begun to run from pillar to post to avert the catastrophe.

It was reliably gathered that since the speaker made his mid-term performance speech recently, members have begun to besiege his residence to get the full assurances that they are not going to be affected in the putsch.

Sources close to the office of the Speaker disclosed that when the inflow of members was becoming worrisome, Tambuwal had to abandon his house for an unknown residence in Abuja where he would not be disturbed.

Members are said to be confused over this situation when they could not reach Tambuwal as some of were were said to have sent friends and associates close to the Speaker for intervention.

The leadership of the House have discovered that out of about its 92 committees, less than twenty are actually performing while others are struggling under rudderless leadership.

Among those committees adjudged to be working are: committee on appropriation, public petition, Rules and Business, finance, science and technology, pension, environment, media and publicity,works, aviation and a few others.

Since the last two years when the House committees were inaugurated, some of the Chairmen are yet to call a meeting and others so appropriated their committee in such a way as running same as private business. This, according to the leadership, runs contrary to the avouched Legislative Agenda espoused by Tambuwal's leadership.

But the Speaker who alluded to these facts in his mid-term speech assured Nigerians that something had to be done fast and that any erring committee chairman would be sanctioned accordingly so that within the next two years, meaningful achievements would have been made in the areas of legislation for good governance.

The change in the House Committee leadership, it was believed, would further raise the ante of its performance in the next two years.
