The Director General and Chief Executive Office of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Barrister Chris E. Onyemenam has said that, about 75 percent of the national identity cards currently in circulation are fake.

He made this assertion at a forum organized by the Commission in Port Harcourt, adding that over 100 Million Nigerians were without national identity cards.

The Director said that, because of the large concentration of activities in the urban areas, most people in the rural areas suffer serious neglect in terms of registration. He said that enrolment units of the commission are to be established in each local government headquarters before the third quarter of this year. He further promised that the enrolment centres in Port Harcourt would soon be increased to six.

Barrister Onyemenam stated that, while previous efforts focused on the issuance of identity cards, the Commission, this time around, has introduced some parameters to ensure that the process meets international standards.

He said that the Commission is poised to create awareness on the importance of registration as national identity cards in the future would become the basis for all government transaction in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the chairman House of Representative Committee on Interior, Hon. Umar Bature, who spoke through a member of the committee, Hon. Peter Ede said that, the scheme will help in crime control in the country.

He emphatically stated that the registration would provide a database for national planning as well as ease the process of infrastructural management in the country, while facilitating the provision of other social services.
