Sharks ended the first round of the league with a 1 0 victory over Enugu Rangers in a rescheduled Week 16 fixture at the Sharks Stadium on Sunday.

The match was settled in the 37th minute when Ekene Iwuorie headed into his own net while trying to ward off Nasiru Husseini from a Sharks corner. Sharks had an edge in an open first half, but Tayo Fabiyi and Gabriel Agu did not take their chances.

There were two chances of note in the second period.

The first came the way of the hosts, when Rangers goalkeeper Daniel Emmanuel was at full stretch to parry Husseini's effort from the edge of the box away for a corner in the 74th minute.

The other fell the way of Rangers in the 88th minute, but Efe Yarhere, with so much space and time, headed Haliru Umar's delivery wide with Sharks goalkeeper Danladi Issah stranded.

Sharks assistant coach Daoboere Dokmubu told supersport.com that he was impressed with his side's performance.

"We played far above average compared to other games," he said.

He also promised they would move out of the relegation zone when the second round of the league resumes.

"We aren't satisfied with our position in the league, and we will soon leave there," he said.

"I am promising some away victories in the second round, and there will be no more dropping of points at home."

Rangers coach, Okey Emordi, left the stadium while Dokubo was talking to the press and could not be reached for his views on the match.

Sharks remain bottom of the NPFL log with 20 points from 19 matches, while Rangers are 10th with 27 points from 18 matches.
