Prime FC technical adviser, Ademola Adesina is an inconsolable man following his side's 4-5 penalty shootout defeat to Bayelsa United in the Federation Cup round of 64 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City on Wednesday.
.
Full time score stood at 1-1 and while the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side were able to convert their kicks the Nigeria National League (NNL) side missed one of their kicks through striker, Babatunde Kazeem.
.
The Osogbo-based side won for themselves the acronym 'giant-killers' for their five-star performance in last year's edition that saw them dispatch top premier league sides like Wikki Tourists, Enyimba and Enugu Rangers, among others before they finally defeated Kano Pillars in the losers' final to end their illustrious campaign with the bronze medal.
.
Adesina said it is painful for his side to leave the competition at the elementary stage after they succeeded in raising people's expectations following last year's spectacular performances.
.
"I'm totally disappointed to bid the 2013 Federation Cup bye in the first round of the competition, I don't think we deserved to leave the stage right now given our prominent performance last year.
.
"We played a very good game taking the lead before Bayelsa United drew level thereby taking the match to penalty shootouts. We scored all except the last one taken by our striker, Babatunde Kazeem. I think he approached his kick too casually.
.
"I've taken the bitter lesson in good faith, we'll go back home to work on a new strategy that will see us bounce back immediately.
.
"At least, I took solace in the fact that we're not disgraced holding a premier side who are fourth on the log to a standstill for 90 minutes, penalty shootout is anybody's game.
.
"I took out Ladan Bosso as Wikki Tourists coach out from last year's competition now as coach of Bayelsa United I knew he'll come out at me. He was truly 100% prepared for me and eventually he's the victor and I'm the vanquished," said the former Nigerian star to supersport.com.
.
Adesina said building the side all over after the stars that achieved the bronze feat left to various clubs which was really tough badly contributed to the below performance of the side in this year's competition.
